The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is celebrating one hundred seventy-two students this summer for participating in the 2025 Youth Employment Programmes, an initiative designed to bridge the gap between education and meaningful employment.
The programmes, which include the Summer Employment Programme and Summer Internship Programme, are part of the Government's ongoing efforts to equip young Bermudians with the tools, skills, and confidence they need to thrive in today's workforce.
Real Experience, Real Impact
From May 5 to August 29, 100 university students in the Summer Employment Programme earn $600 per week while gaining hands-on experience across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Students were strategically placed in roles aligned with their academic studies and long-term career goals. Placement fields included Health, Psychology, Hospitality, Environmental Sciences, and Law.
In July, 72 high school students joined the Summer Internship Programme, a four-week introduction to the professional world that offered a $1,600 stipend upon completion. These placements spanned a range of industries—from IT and Trades to Youth Development and Legal services—helping students explore career possibilities while building workplace readiness.
Both programmes are intentionally designed to:
- Enhance students' academic learning through real-world application
- Provide exposure to diverse industries and professional pathways
- Build leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Encourage civic engagement and career-focused goal setting
Participants reported meaningful, life-shaping experiences. One university student, Chayse Tanner, shared their perspective, "The Youth Employment Programme was exceptionally well-organised, and I am truly grateful for how smoothly everything ran throughout the entire experience. My placement with the Bermuda Government's Department of Child and Family Services was a perfect fit. It challenged me and confirmed my career aspirations. The support from the Workforce Development team made me feel valued, and I hope to return next summer."
The benefits of the programme extend beyond the students. Employers across the island commended the calibre of participants and their impact. Wayne Smith, Executive Director of ABIC, stated, "This summer, ABIC welcomed four interns—three through the Youth Employment Programme—and each brought enthusiasm, professionalism, and fresh energy to our team. These young people were well-prepared, driven, and mature. I encourage employers to get involved. Investing in young talent isn't just good practice—it's how we build Bermuda's future."
Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, praised the initiative, highlighting its long-term value, stating, "The Youth Employment Programme is more than a summer job. It's a foundation for future success. These experiences help our young people connect what they learn in the classroom to what's expected in the workplace. As a Government, we are committed to ensuring that Bermuda's youth are equipped, confident, and ready to succeed."
