Bermuda bids fond farewell to HRH The Duchess of Gloucester

Duchess and Gombeys

Last evening (Oct. 21), Bermuda bade farewell to Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester, following a memorable official visit to the island.

Arriving on Thursday, October 16, HRH was welcomed as part of the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, in her role as Colonel-in-Chief.

During her stay, The Duchess engaged in a wide-ranging itinerary that highlighted Bermuda’s rich culture, community spirit, and environmental stewardship.

On Monday, prior to her departure, HRH visited the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) and Trunk Island, where she learned about ongoing environmental initiatives and conservation efforts.

Later yesterday afternoon, HRH attended Government House, where she toured the student garden and met with leaders of the Eco Club which uses the grounds to grow endemic species to plant across the island.

The visit concluded with a commemorative tree planting ceremony, symbolizing her support for sustainability. The afternoon ended on a vibrant note with a high-energy performance by Bermuda’s iconic H&H Gombey Troupe, accompanied by an overview of the cultural significance and history of the Gombeys.

Throughout her visit, HRH participated in several key events, including Saturday’s spectacular Trooping of the Colours, a special Sunday Service at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, and visits to HOME Bermuda and the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy. She also attended a Gala Dinner in honour of the Regiment’s milestone anniversary and presented Operational Service Medals to RBR soldiers in recognition of their service.

Finally, last evening, dignitaries, including His Excellency the Governor, Premier David Burt, Chief Justice Larry Mussenden and others officially said farewell to HRH at the L.F. Wade International Airport and extended the Government and people of Bermuda’s heartfelt thanks to Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester, for her gracious engagement throughout her visit.

Her support for the Royal Bermuda Regiment and her genuine interest in Bermuda’s culture, education, and environment have left a lasting impression.

His Excellency the Governor said today, “All those who helped organise, support and deliver the packed visit, of which there are many, should be proud of their endeavours and what they achieved.  It was a wonderful programme of events, and I’m grateful to all those who helped made it happen.”
