The public is reminded that the nomination deadline to choose Bermuda’s next National Hero is tomorrow, November 12, 2024.
The public will be aware that National Heroes Day, observed annually on the third Monday in June, is a public holiday dedicated to honouring those individuals who have made lasting contributions to the island’s history and heritage. This honour represents Bermuda’s highest recognition for exceptional and enduring service to the community.
In keeping with the recently passed National Heroes Act 2024, the public nomination process takes place once every ten years. The window for submissions closes tomorrow.
There is still time to nominate a new National Hero. Residents can visit: https://forms.gov.bm/Bermuda-National-Hero-Nomination.
When launching the nomination process last month (October), the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen Darrell, JP, said, “Being named a National Hero is a rare honour. Nominees should embody qualities such as dedication, ethical leadership, and a lasting positive impact on Bermuda. Their contributions should stand the test of time, demonstrating relevance to both past and future generations. A Naming and Recognition Committee will be established, composed of seven (7) appointed members, who will evaluate public nominations. This committee will not only review nominations for National Heroes but will also consider recommendations for renaming public sites and creating monuments in their honour.”
Bermuda’s induction of National Heroes began in 2009. Currently there are eight (8) National Heroes.
