The Bermuda Department of Immigration (DOI) extends its heartfelt concern to all those impacted by the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Jamaica. We recognise that these circumstances have created uncertainty and hardship for many, and we remain committed to approaching all immigration matters with understanding, fairness, and compassion, while upholding Bermuda’s immigration laws.
Under Bermuda’s Immigration and Protection Act 1956, visitors may remain on the island for up to 180 days within any 12-month period. Individuals who are nearing or have exceeded this permitted length of stay (ALOS) are encouraged to contact the Department’s Compliance Section at 444-1056 as soon as possible to discuss their individual circumstances. Each case will be reviewed with care and sensitivity. Please note that failure to contact the Department may affect future travel to Bermuda.
To assist those who are lawfully in Bermuda and experiencing hardship due to conditions in Jamaica, the Department encourages eligible individuals to apply for Annual Residency. This option offers greater stability.
The Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, stated: “We understand that not everyone will be able to meet the full documentation or eligibility requirements for Annual Residency. In recognition of these challenges, the Department will also consider applications for Temporary Residency of up to 90 days. This special provision will remain available until December 31, 2025.”
All applicants must be able to demonstrate their current residence in Jamaica and provide clear reasons for their request. It is important to note that this measure is not an extension of visitor status, but a separate and time-limited form of residency designed to offer relief and stability during a difficult time.
The Department urges all affected individuals to reach out promptly and in good faith to ensure compliance with Bermuda’s immigration laws and to explore available pathways to remain in good standing.
