In celebration of Caribbean Statistics Day and World Statistics Day, the Department of Statistics will host a series of events and promotional activities between 13th and 20th October, highlighting the vital role of statistics in national development and supporting the upcoming 2026 Population and Housing Census.
Caribbean Statistics Day is celebrated annually on 15 October. This year's theme, "Improving Lives through Statistics: Strengthening and Innovating Together," underscores the importance of collaboration, innovation, and data-driven decision-making in achieving Bermuda's national goals.
World Statistics Day is observed every five years, with this year's celebration taking place on Monday, 20 October. This year's theme is "Driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone."
The Minister for Economy and Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP, MP, explained, “Statistics are the foundation of good governance, sound policy, and effective decision-making. As Bermuda prepares for the 2026 Census of Population and Housing, we are reminded that every data point represents a person, a family, and a community. The information we collect helps the Government and partners' Fill the Gap’, ensuring our decisions are guided by accurate, reliable, and timely data.”
Throughout the week, the Department will engage the public through a range of interactive and educational activities. These include a series of radio appearances to promote statistics, as well as the 2026 Population and Housing Census and its importance to Bermuda's social and economic planning. The Department will also launch a social media campaign, featuring posts that celebrate Caribbean Statistics Day and World Statistics Day.
In addition, public displays highlighting the value of statistics and showcasing materials related to the 2016 Population and Housing Census will be featured at the Bermuda National Library and Bermuda College Library, accompanied by a selection of the Department's publications.
To mark World Statistics Day on Monday, 20 October, staff members from the Department of Statistics will be at the Bermuda College Library engaging with students and promoting the importance of statistics and the 2026 Census.
