The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, in collaboration with the Bermuda Health Council and the Ministry of Health, has released the Dementia Integrated Care Pathway (ICP) Report 2025. The report provides a comprehensive, evidence-based framework to improve how dementia is prevented, identified, treated, and supported across Bermuda. As the island’s population continues to age, the report responds to the growing need for coordinated, person-centred dementia care that better supports individuals living with dementia, their families, and caregivers.
The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, emphasised the importance of the report, stating, “Dementia affects not only those living with the condition, but also the families and caregivers who support them every day. This Integrated Care Pathway is about bringing clarity, coordination, and compassion to a system that has too often left families feeling overwhelmed and alone. It provides a foundation for a more responsive and inclusive approach to dementia care in Bermuda.”
The Acting Minister of Health, the Hon. Alexa Lightbourne, JP, MP, highlighted the importance of coordinated, person-centered dementia care, stating, “Dementia is one of the most urgent public health challenges facing Bermuda, and the Dementia Integrated Care Pathway is essential to delivering a coordinated, person-centred response. A clear, structured mechanism for early identification, prevention, and integrated care is critical, given the pressure dementia places on our health system and long-term care services. This pathway provides a practical framework to close service gaps, reduce stigma, and better support individuals and families, ensuring that no one faces this journey alone. By embedding dementia-friendly practices across our health and social systems, we can protect dignity, improve quality of life, and ensure our seniors are supported both now and for generations to come.”
The Dementia Integrated Care Pathway outlines a seven-stage approach covering awareness and risk reduction, early detection, diagnosis, ongoing medical and social care, community-based support, and end-of-life care. The Government encourages members of the public, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and community organisations to review the report and engage with its recommendations, as Bermuda works towards building a more dementia-friendly society that supports healthy ageing and ensures no family faces dementia without guidance or support.
