Minister of Home Affairs represents Bermuda at CARICOM 50th Opening Ceremony

Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis - Yesterday (February 24), the Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Alexa Lightbourne JP, MP, represented Bermuda at the 50th Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Opening Ceremony held in St. Kitts and Nevis, marking a significant milestone in the regional body’s history.

Minister Lightbourne participated in official commemorative events alongside regional leaders, ministers, and delegates, underscoring Bermuda’s continued engagement with CARICOM and its commitment to strengthening cooperation across the Caribbean.

The ceremony featured remarks from the Outgoing Chair, Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, and a keynote address from the Incoming Chair, The Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, alongside other distinguished regional leaders. The programme set a clear and purposeful tone for the deliberations ahead under the theme: Beyond Words: Action Today for a Thriving, Sustainable CARICOM.

A vibrant cultural showcase highlighted the richness, diversity, and enduring spirit of the Caribbean Community, reinforcing the shared heritage that unites member states.

Today Minister Lightbourne said, “CARICOM’s 50th Regular Meeting is a powerful reminder of the value of regional unity and collaboration. Bermuda is very proud to stand with our Caribbean partners as we reflect on the progress made over five decades and work together to address the shared challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

The 50th Heads of Government meeting is taking place from February 24 – 27, 2026.

Discussions this week for CARICOM members are focused on critical issues including regional security, climate resilience, economic development, trade and investment, health cooperation, and the advancement of functional cooperation across the Community.
