Minister Peets visits Verdmont

Verdmont Museum was the latest stop by the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. Ernest Peets, who continued his visits to the island’s museums, galleries and historical landmarks.

Located in Smith’s Parish, Verdmont Historic Home and Garden is owned and maintained by the Bermuda National Trust. The Georgian style house was built in the 1700s. The main home and Verdmont Cottage have deep historical links, as they are a part of the African Diaspora Heritage Trail. On the Trust’s Rediscover Verdmont Tour, visitors can view Verdmont’s furnished rooms, museum exhibits and hilltop gardens of this African Diaspora Heritage Trail site while imagining the interwoven 18th century lives of a merchant family and the families they enslaved.

Minister Peets said, “Creative and cultural practitioners are vital to our identity. They document and showcase our history, talents and creative innovators. Verdmont Museum is considered the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Bermuda National Trust properties. It conveys the fullness of its culturally legacy for Bermudians from all walks of life. I want to thank the BNT for inviting me to view the property and extend my appreciation for their commitment to preserving our heritage.”

The public will be aware that as part of his ongoing support of the island’s cultural institutions, Minister Peets has committed to engaging with those who oversee and manage these facilities. The Ministry notes that the Bermuda National Trust received a $6,000 Heritage Grant from the Department of Culture in 2021 to support their Cultural Heritage Education Programme. The grant provided assistance with making Trust databases digitally accessible.

The Minister’s next cultural visit will be in May and will coincide with Heritage Month activities.
