Ministry of Public Works and Environment Launches Tree and Hedge Trimming Campaign

Public Works and Environment

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is launching a public awareness campaign to remind property owners to routinely trim overhanging trees and hedges that extend onto the Island’s roadways.

Through Government and Waste Management communication platforms, the campaign will encourage residents to act now to reduce hazards and support hurricane readiness.

Overgrown vegetation poses risks for sanitation workers and causes costly damage to waste collection and other government vehicles. Branches scraping against vehicles can shatter windscreens, which can cost up to $5,000 to replace, and also risk worker injury and service delays.

Acting Minister of Public Works and Environment Diallo Rabain commented: “We are asking all property owners to play their part by trimming back trees and hedges around their homes.

“Overhanging greenery is not just a nuisance, it can cause injuries, damage expensive public service equipment, and slow down the delivery of essential services. With hurricane season upon us, untrimmed vegetation also increases the risk of storm damage and can hamper clean up and recovery efforts.

“With some simple steps now, we can keep our roads safe, protect our workers, and ensure services continue without unnecessary disruption.”

The Ministry notes that with rapid seasonal growth, now is the ideal time for residents to trim back their trees and hedges. Regular maintenance helps reduce workplace hazards, safeguards vital public service vehicles, and strengthens hurricane preparedness.

Residents are encouraged to remember the key message of the campaign: “Trim it back! Keep our roads safe and our workers protected.”
