Renewal of Refrigerant Handlers’ Permits
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reminds all technicians who handle or manage refrigerant gases for domestic and commercial HVAC systems that, under the Clean Air Act and Regulations, they must possess a valid “Certified Technician for Refrigerant Handling” photo identification card issued by DENR.
To obtain this identification card, HVAC Technicians must:
·Show evidence of relevant training to Mr. Ornette Fough of the Bermuda College;
·Attend a refresher meeting organized by Bermuda College and DENR (cost: $25 per person);
·Submit a completed application form and fee to DENR. The form is available online at www.gov.bm. Presently, the fee is $220 and is subject to increase on 1 April 2022.
Technicians who attended the December 2021 refresher meetings are asked to apply for their photo identification cards as soon as possible.
Technicians who have not yet attended a refresher meeting are strongly encouraged to email pollutioncontrol@gov.bm before 1 February 2022 to reserve a spot. Attendance numbers are limited due to Covid restrictions.
Full details of the process and a list of the names of certified refrigerant handlers are available atwww.gov.bm/online-services/apply-refrigerant-handler-permit. The public is advised to ensure their air conditioning unit installers and maintainers are certified.
HVAC Technicians who do not have their photo ID card by 1 March 2022 will be in contravention of the Clean Air Regulations 1993 (6), punishable upon conviction by imprisonment not exceeding six months &/or a fine not exceeding $5,000.
