National Heroes Day 2024
This year, Bermuda observes National Heroes Day on Monday, June 17th, 2024, in honour of eight trailblazing Bermudians who have made immense contributions to Bermuda.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Sen. The Hon. Owen K. Darrell, JP, will be a special guest at the 80th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race. A fleet will set sail from the West End Boat Club destined for St. George’s Harbour to the race's starting point in the east end.
Minister Darrell said, “We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our National Heroes as many will be encouraged to reflect on the history and contributions of eight exceptional Bermudians. Their legacies have had a lasting impact on the cultural, political, and business landscape of our island inspiring generations of people.”
As a reminder, our national heroes are:
- Dame Lois Browne-Evans, DBE, JP, LLB
- Dr. E.F. Gordon
- Dr. Pauulu R.N.O.B Kamarakafego (Dr. Roosevelt Brown)
- Sir Henry James “Jack” Tucker
- Mary Prince
- Gladys Misick Morrell
- Sir Edward Richards, KT, CBE
- Sir John W. Swan, KBE, JP
Minister Darrell concluded, “Whether spending time with family and loved ones, participating in the Carnival in Bermuda Parade of Bands event, or quietly reflecting on the lives of our National Heroes today, I encourage everyone to have a safe holiday weekend.”
In October this year, the government will open nominations to add a new national hero. Under the mandate, the process is open to the public to submit nominations once every ten years.
