What to do in case of a fire
Fires are one of the common kinds of emergencies. There are several things to know in order to reduce the possibility of being injured during a fire.
How Can I Reduce the Chances of a Fire at Home?
- Make sure that each area of your house has a smoke detector;
- Make sure each family member knows how to leave the house safely in the event of a fire;
- Keep your heaters at least three feet from anything which can burn;
- Make sure that your shirt-sleeves are rolled up when you cook, and that you turn off the burner before picking up a pot.
How Can I Reduce the Chances of a Fire at Work?
- Make sure that you know the escape routes from your building;
- Participate in scheduled and unscheduled fire drills;
- Request fire drill assistance;
- Check electrical cords or outlets to make sure that they are not damaged or located in high traffic areas where they can be stepped on; and
- Request a consultation, appointment or meeting about fire safety.
Businesses must be inspected on a regular basis in order to receive a fire certificate.
What Should I Do If There is an Incident with Hazardous Waste?
If there is an accident involving hazardous waste, you should immediately contact the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service to let them know what has happened and where the incident has occurred.
