The Ministry of Health is pleased to announce the 2024 Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship recipients. This prestigious scholarship, named in honor of the late Dr. Barbara Ball, the first Bermudian woman to practice medicine in Bermuda, supports Bermudians pursuing careers in public health.

The scholarship is awarded to Bermudian students who demonstrate academic excellence while pursuing careers or professional development in public health.

Candidates were assessed on academic achievement, financial need, public health need, and the quality of their application. 14 shortlisted candidates were interviewed and after a difficult selection process, 12 candidates were awarded between $6,000 to $9,000 each.

The 2024 recipients are:

 

  • Ms. Asha Hoyte, studying Child and Educational Psychology at the University of East London, UK.
  • Ms. Nia Dailey, studying Medicine at Queen Mary University of London Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
  • Mrs. Tylasha Desilva, studying Social Work at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. 
  • Ms. Elisha Bailey-Lewis, studying Medicine at St. George’s University, Grenada.
  • Ms. Jordan Bascome, studying Medicine at the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine.
  • Mr. Joshua Correia, studying Medicine at St. George’s, University, Grenada. 
  • Ms. Dy-Juan DeRoza, studying Public Health at the University of Toronto, Canada.
  • Ms. Storm Gibbons, studying Medicine at St. George’s University, Grenada.
  • Ms. Ronnelle James, studying Nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland.
  • Ms. Harlee Purvey, studying Health Sciences at Western University, Canada.
  • Ms. Veronica Swan-DeGraff, studying Medicine at St. George’s, University, Grenada. 
  • Ms. Tiontae Thomas Clarke, studying Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA.

The Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship is awarded annually to Bermudians pursuing careers in public health. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, and other educational expenses.

About Dr. Barbara Ball

Dr. Barbara Ball was a pioneer in public health in Bermuda. She was the first Bermudian woman to practice medicine in Bermuda, and she dedicated her life to improving the health of the underprivileged. Dr. Ball was a tireless advocate for public health, and she made significant contributions to the field.
