December Public Service Excellence Awardee Recognised
The Government of Bermuda is pleased to advise that Sylvia Robinson, from the Ministry of Health, is the recipient of the December Public Service Excellence Award (PSEA).
This recognition highlights Ms. Robinson’s extraordinary contributions to public health as a Community Health Nurse within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit. It is a particularly rewarding achievement, as Ms. Robinson retired at the end of December 2024, concluding a remarkable 36-year nursing career, with 26 of those years dedicated to the Ministry of Health.
Her award was given for exemplifying service excellence during the recent measles outbreak in Bermuda. Leading a dedicated team of reassigned public health nurses, she managed the intricate process of case management and contact tracing for numerous close contacts. Her work included assessing infection risk, daily monitoring of symptoms, and delivering vital health education over a challenging 21-day incubation period - efforts that successfully prevented further transmission of the disease.
“This accomplishment was nothing short of heroic,” said Director of Health, David Kendell. “The economic and social disruption that could have resulted from an uncontrolled outbreak cannot be understated.”
Ms. Robinson’s role was instrumental in safeguarding Bermuda’s most vulnerable populations, including children under five years, pregnant women, and those who are immunocompromised. This work extends globally, as Bermuda's efforts to stop the spread of infectious diseases are reported to international health organizations such as the UK Health Security Agency and the Pan American Health Organization.
“Sylvia has been the face of Health protection efforts surrounding infectious diseases, consistently going above and beyond the call of duty to uphold best practices and advocate for patients,” said Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shaun Ramroop, in praise of Ms. Robinson’s tireless work-ethic. “Her swift-action, especially in a post-pandemic context, demonstrated exceptional ability to navigate complex challenges, mobilize resources effectively, and prioritize the health and safety of Bermuda’s community.”
On Friday (Jan. 10), Premier David Burt thanked her for her service, specifically her work during the recent measles outbreak, saying, “The recent outbreak of measles was very concerning for our community, and due to Ms. Robinson’s incredible work, we were able to contain it. I am grateful for her efforts and am proud to recognise her for her efforts today.”
And Head of the Public Service, Cherie-lynn Whitter echoed the Premier’s sentiments, saying, “We are pleased to recognize Ms. Robinson’s legacy at the Ministry of Health with this award. Her contributions in December 2024 represent the kind of excellence in public service that deserves commendation. We wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”
The PSEA is a programme that recognises a group or individual within the Public Service who made significant achievements in service delivery in the last 60 days.
