Remarks By: The Hon. E. David Burt, JP, MP
Good Morning, MP Swan, President Paynter:
As the Cup Match holiday draws near, it is a pleasure to join you today to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to supporting this cherished tradition, a cornerstone of Bermuda’s heritage.
In just a few days, our island will come together to celebrate our history, commemorate the emancipation of our ancestors on Emancipation Day, and enjoy the unity and friendly rivalry that only Cup Match brings.
At the centre of it all is the Annual Cup Match Classic between Somerset and St. George’s, hosted this year at the historic Wellington Oval.
Today, I am proud to present a cheque for $55,000 on behalf of the Government of Bermuda to St. George’s Cricket Club to support hosting this year’s event.
The contribution we make today reflects this Government’s commitment to honouring that history and supporting and preserving Bermuda’s premier sporting event. Our support goes beyond finances and includes safety checks of the scaffolding on the cricket field, ensuring that players and spectators can enjoy the match safely.
I extend my gratitude to the executives, coaches, players, staff, and volunteers of both clubs and to the many local businesses whose support makes Cup Match possible.
Your dedication and months of preparation embody the spirit of this event and its importance to our island.
I wish St. George’s Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Club the very best of luck in what promises to be another thrilling contest. May we all enjoy a safe and memorable Cup Match holiday.
Thank you.
Remarks by: The Hon. Owen K. Darrell, JP, MP
Good morning.
Mr. Premier, Mr Paynter, President of the St. George’s Cricket Club, members and guests.
With Cup Match returning to St. George’s this year, the excitement is building across the island, and we are proud to support the St. George’s Cricket Club. A lot of hard work and preparation goes into hosting this event – resulting in an unforgettable, uniquely Bermudian experience rooted in pride and resilience. We are all grateful for this massive labour of love.
It goes without saying that Cup Match stands as Bermuda’s most cherished sporting event, bringing together the entire island to celebrate cricket, unity, and culture.
- It transcends age, race, and background, fostering a powerful sense of community.
- Beyond the game, Cup Match is a tribute to Bermuda’s heritage and spirit.
Day 1 – Emancipation Day
- Commemorates the abolition of slavery in Bermuda.
- Honors the sacrifices and resilience of those who fought for freedom and laid the groundwork for today’s liberties.
Day 2 – Mary Prince Day
- Celebrates the life and legacy of Mary Prince, a Bermudian hero whose voice and activism championed justice and equality.
As the celebrations begin, Cup Match is not only about revelry—it’s a moment to reflect, unite, and honor the enduring legacy of Bermudian culture.
I wish everyone a safe and happy Cup Match.
Thank you.
