Hundreds Participate in Interschool Field Hockey Tournaments

The Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF), in collaboration with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Bermuda Hockey Federation (BHF), hosted the annual Interschool Field Hockey Tournaments on October 6-9, drawing outstanding participation across all divisions.
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, commended the event’s success and the continued growth of youth sport in Bermuda, stating, “It is inspiring to see so many of our young people participating in field hockey and representing their schools with passion. Events like these demonstrate the power of sport to build character, teamwork, and community spirit. I commend the organizers, coaches, teachers, and volunteers for their dedication to ensuring our students have meaningful opportunities to grow and excel both on and off the pitch.”
Over the course of four days, more than 500 students took to the pitch, showcasing the depth of talent and enthusiasm for field hockey across Bermuda’s schools.
Chairperson for hockey, Megan Troake of Somersfield Academy, expressed her delight with the turnout and the continued progress of young athletes in the sport, stating, “This marks our fifth tournament since COVID, and the progression of players from the primary through middle and senior levels is both evident and very pleasing.”
Saltus captured first place in the Senior School Girls Division after a 3–2 double-overtime sudden-death victory over Somersfield. The winners got goals from Jaeda Grant, Marley Tear, and Jaya Dillard, while Grace Lightowler and Zarah Fahy scored for Somersfield Academy.
Somersfield Academy came out on top in the Senior Boys Championship after defeating Saltus in a high-scoring 5–4 final. Louis Manning led the score for Somersfield with two goals, while Matthew Troake, Aaron Lee, and Hayden Smith each added one. Zach McGuire, Jamiae Ashton, Isai Gibbons, and Euan Forster found the back of the net for Saltus.
In the Middle School Girls Division, Somersfield Blue earned gold, with Warwick Academy taking silver. In the Middle School Boys Division, Somersfield Blue again claimed gold, while Saltus Red finished with silver.
There was also strong participation from primary schools across the island, with 20 schools attending a non-competitive festival focused on fun, inclusion, and skill development.
A key feature of Bermuda’s hockey community is the way national team players give back to their sport. All senior athletes are required to coach, umpire, or teach across various age groups, helping to strengthen relationships and foster meaningful connections within Bermuda’s small but vibrant hockey community.

The organizers extend a special thank you to the volunteers from the Bermuda Hockey Federation and to the island’s PE teachers for going above and beyond outside the classroom to provide these valuable opportunities for their students.
